Responsible Business - Let's Take Responsibility

Taking responsibility for the environment and local community has been an important part of the Rezidor Hotel Group’s broader commitment to sustainable development for many years. In 2001, this commitment was fortified and places within the scope of a program called Responsible Business (RB). Each hotel has a unique RB Action Plan covering areas such as community outreach, cultural heritage, employee and children’s rights, health and safety, as well as environmental improvements. To read more about RB program, please visit responsiblebusiness.rezidor.com.

The hotels are engaged with both local charity groups and the corporate international charity organization of the Rezidor Hotel Group, the World Childhood Foundation. The mission of Childhood is to defend the rights of the child and to promote better living conditions for vulnerable and exploited children at risk all over the world. See www.childhood.org for further information.

Below are some of the RB activities and achievements of this hotel: Waste generation

The staff at the hotel follow three simple rules to help cut waste generation:

1. Reduce:

Suppliers are asked to decrease the amount of packing in their deliveries. Guests are asked to re-use their towels (towel cards in the bathroom). Bed linens are changed every other day (just for long-staying guests).

2. Re-Use:

Papers are printed on both sides as much as possible. Frying oil is collected for reuse by a certified company “Filtafry.” Donating hotel furniture, bedding and equipment to charity, such as an orphanage in Surinam.

3. Recycle:

Strict waste separation in all departments. Corks are collected for schools and kindergartens for handicrafts. Recycling: paper, cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, printer cartridges, magnetic cards, batteries.

 Energy efficiency:

We used energy-efficient light bulbs. Lights in public areas have an energy saving night mode. Single switch off/on for all lighting in guest rooms. Key cards, so that light is consumed only when used. A cogeneration plant built by 2011 for the production of electrical energy and heat.

Security

Safety and Security within the Rezidor Hotel Group rely on the simple formula TRIC: Threat Assessment, Risk Evaluation, Incident Response, and Crises Management & Communication.
All staff have been trained to perform first aid in case of a medical emergency and to use the Heart Start defibrillator. The staff have also been trained to be part of a fire & evacuation team.

Community involvements/charities:
Responsible Business is not just about the environment; we also take into account social and economic issues conserning the local community.

What do we do?
Over the last few years, several staff members have been running marathons for charities like World Childhood foundation. A piggy bank is at the reception for the Children's Cancer Foundation Karlsruhe. The money for Christmas gifts for clients is used in charitable contributions to the World Childhood foundation.

The hotel has spent several beautiful days with program and child-friendly meals for children with cancer and their families. Donations to the Association for children with cancer in Karlsruhe. This hotel with 199 rooms has just only 20 smoking rooms, the other rooms are all non- smoking rooms.

Vegetarian dishes are offered at the hotel.

How you can help?

Put used batteries in one of the Battery boxes at the reception. Rent bikes to explore the rural surroundings. Save energy by switching off any appliances when they are not in use and by not overfilling kettles. Let the hotel know that it’s not necessary to change the sheets and towels every day. At Radisson BLU, staff will not replace towels if they are returnedto the towel rail. On cold nights, draw curtains to keep heat in the room, and similarly on hot days, draw curtains to keep the heat out of the room. If the hotel provides a complimentary newspaper, or if you buy your own, ask the hotel to see that it is recycled. Even better, pass it on to someone else or leave it in the lobby for another reader.

Participate in the recycling program and sort waste accordingly. If the hotel doesn’t recycle, consider taking empty bottles or other items home with you to recycle them there.
